1974 - Ithica
The show opened with Chant and Jubilo, and continued with the popular music from the production Porgy & Bess, (Bess You is My Woman , It Ain"t, Necessarily So ). Chuck Mangione's "Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor" was introduced this year and became one of the Blue Devils most popular pieces. "Feel of Vision," "Touch of Venus", and Bilie Holidays' "Lady Sings the Blues " were the rest of musical selections for this exciting show. The Blue Devils thank the late Carl Jefferson of Concord Jazz for giving us the idea for the jazz theme that continued for all these years. The corps placed ninth at the Ithica, New York Championships.
1975 - Philadelphia
This years show opened with John LaBarbera's "Space Shuttle" as performed by Buddy Richs' big band. A melody of Tower of Powers' "Loves Been Gone Too Long" "What is Hip?" and "Squib Cakes" was a big hit. Concert was Chuck Mangione's Legend of a One Eyed Sailor and Field of a Vision. Chuck Mangione's selection "Chase the Clouds Away" was the exit and became the musical signature of The Blue Devils. The corps took 3rd place that year and paved the road to the 1976 Championship.
1976 - Philadelphia
Bill Reddie's "Channel One Suite" (the Buddy Rich Big Band's recording) was the source of the Blue Devils' first championship off-the-line. Two of Chuck Mangione favorites, "Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor" and "Chase the Clouds Away" concluded the 1976 program, with which the corps not only took first place with the highest recorded total score, but also achieved a clean sweep by winning all captions in the Philadelphia championships.
1977 - Denver
"Channel One Suite" was repeated from the previous year, but two new selections were introduced for the Denver Championships. Chick Corea's "Spanish Fantasy, Part 1V" replaced "Legend", and Bill Conti's popular theme from the motion picture "Rocky" (Gonna Fly Now", as arranged for the Maynard Ferguson band) rounded out the program.
1978 - Denver
The show opened with Bob Curnow's arrangement for the Stan Kenton Orchestra "Chicago III Suite", The program continued again with the popular music of "Spanish Fantasy" Part IV, and concluded with Chuck Mangione's " Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor".
1979 - Birmingham
The 1979 program repeated the opener with Bob Curnow's arrangement of the "Chicago III Suite" followed by another Kentons' recording "LaSuerte de Los Tontos" (Fortune of Fools), from the Cuban Fire album, as penned by John Richard's. The closing ballad is "My Heart Belongs to Me" by Alan Gordan as performed by Barbara Streisand. This powerful program earned the Blue Devils their third World Championship.
